Asset managers and wealth managers are the companies managing investments for others … but is it worth investing in them?

I’m Paul Bryant, and I’m an equity research analyst specialising in the asset and wealth management sectors. So, I probably spend a lot more more time than most investors researching and analysing these companies.

In this newsletter, I aim to provide that extra little bit of insight to the research conducted by shareholders or potential shareholders of asset and wealth managers. If you read a post and think “that was something I didn’t know”, or “that’s a different way of thinking about it”, then I’ve achieved my goal. But this is not investment advice!

The newsletter might also be of interest to executives and directors of asset and wealth managers - giving them a perspective of how investors are thinking about their companies, peers, and competitors.

Posts will include commentary on the most important issues for shareholders:

  • individual company financial results;

  • quarterly comparisons of assets-under-management movements to tease out who’s winning and who’s losing;

  • macro-trends of where capital is moving from and to, and which asset managers benefit or lose from these trends;

  • strategic sector analysis; and

  • thoughts on opportunities and threats.

It is not an industry-gossip newsletter!

This may be a boring-looking financial services sector at first glance, but take a deeper look and you’ll find it’s one of the most interesting sectors on stock markets, with some highly profitable and cash-rich companies (with a fair share of dogs too).

Some of the topics covered will include:

  • Why has this sector got such an impressive and consistent track record of growth? And can it continue?

  • Is ESG investing really the big deal it’s made out to be, or is it starting to come off the rails?

  • Are passive investment funds really eating the world? Or do active fund managers still have a bright future?

  • Who are the winners and losers, and why?

  • Does ongoing industry consolidation really make sense for shareholders, or is management hubris the bigger driver?

  • And lots more …
